Theater District

T: Boylston

Boston’s Theater District has an illustrious background. At one time, risque plays were “banned in Boston,” leading to this phrase coming into colloquial use. This led plays to be shown in Boston’s suburbs, such as Quincy. There is even a legend in that when suburban theater-goers would break during intermission, they would purchase a snack from man who ran a small restaurant. That man’s name was Howard Johnson.
